in his wildest dreams did lifelong baseball fan Dick imagine that magic would
be his ticket into the world of sports. Yet, since he began performing
several years ago, he’s made appearances at three All-Star games, spring
training, baseball fantasy camps, sky boxes, and celebrity golf
tournaments. A West Point grad, Steiner stumbled into magic after a
21-year Army career. "It’s not like having Uncle Harry pluck a quarter
out of your ear," says Steiner, whose forte is sophisticated sorcery—using
close-up magic to amaze his adult audiences at corporate events and private
parties. And as much as he’s loved his second career, he does have one
regret: After performing for Shirley MacLaine, the noted
reincarnation-believing actress, he laments he missed a great line.
"She asked me how long I’d been doing magic," he says.
"I should have said 600 years."
